Hi everyone,

I'm seeking clarification on Table 7.8 – Performance Requirements for Water Heating Equipment in ASHRAE 90.1-2010. Specifically, the column titled "Size Category (Input)" is a bit unclear to me.

Does this "input" refer to:

  1. The capacity of the domestic hot water system as a whole, or
  2. The backup system capacity, in cases where a solar water heating system is present?

Any insights or references would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

The answer is #1. So in the case of a solar hot water system it would be the input capacity of the whole system as well including the solar components.

Hi Marcus, what if we only have solar water heating system for catering the whole hot water system in the building?
