Solid wood suspended ceiling slats, which category is this?

Hello,

I am currently working on a project in Europe where I have a slatted suspended ceiling made of treated solid wood. I was hoping to categorise it as composite wood as the product only has an A+ French VOC emissions evaluation. Complying with the EN 16516:2017 requirements stated by LEED seems more challenging without an approved certification so I was hoping to avoid having to categorise it as a ceiling (the solid ceiling above the slats will be categorised here, however).

In general, can treated solid wood products fit into the composite wood category? It seems that otherwise it can be harder to comply with a product that is in practice considered less emissive.

Cecilia,  It would not be appropriate to categorize solid wood as composite wood.  Slatted wood ceilings are typically a "system" of component parts and should be categorized as a "Ceiling" for purposes of the Low Emitting credit, however, if you have testing that meets the VOC Emissions criteria, you are meeting the credit requirement for ceilings.  Please note that composite wood would require "NAF" or "ULEF" compliance. If you are using v4.1 credit criteria and your EN 16516:2017 testing is not meeting the requirements you can consider whether your (non-compliant) ceiling is less than 10% (by cost or suface area) of the total, in which case you can still achieve compliance for this (ceiling) category.
