report citations regarding AI

is anyone aware of some guidance about citation protocols for when a person/team/org uses an AI tool to generate some base components for a report (which is then heavily edited by humans)?

I'm inclined to disclose in detail which tools were used and how ... but would love to know if there are some industry protocols shaping up about this.

thank you!

We have just developed an internal AI policy at HGA, where our legal team has clarified where we should cite AI tools. It was informed by the AIA Innovation Design Consortium, which worked on an AI policy in the last year with input from all the member firms (including HGA). Our policy outlines guidelines for things like:
  • Amount of human intervention. Significant editing, revising, re-arranging, additional language, removal of language, etc. makes an original work, even if AI was involved at some point.
  • Text vs. images. Image tools (ex: Midjourney) require naming the tool that was used, while text tools if heavily edited by humans do not require citation. This is in alignment with US Copyright Office rulings, where they've denied protection for images created using Midjourney but allowed registration for text.
  • Image watermark. We are starting to use a watermark for images generated with the support of AI tools.
