Please see the following invite from Professor Alexandra Rempel at the University of Oregon to participate a 15-20 minute phone/Zoom interview and share your experience and/or perceptions on the problems, challenges, and barriers to incorporating into your projects.
This effort is part of an NSF research grant that I am involved in and part of a national survey effort. Thank you for considering,
Mike
Dear Architects, Designers, and Building Sustainability Experts,
I’m Alexandra Rempel, an Associate Professor at the University of Oregon. My research group, including Mike Fowler of Mithun and Sandipan Mishra of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), recently won a National Science Foundation grant to develop new design tools for passive cooling and heating systems, and a subset of this group is now interviewing practitioners to understand their experiences in designing such systems. We’re focusing on dynamic passive systems for this project, such as operable exterior shading and natural ventilation, which have extraordinary yet largely un-realized potential to reduce building energy loads.
We’re interested in learning about the problems, challenges, and barriers you and your associates have encountered in such efforts, as well as the broader role of sustainability efforts in your projects.
To gather this information, we’ll be interviewing about 100 architects, engineers, and educators between Tuesday, March 26 and Friday, May 3. Each interview will take about 15-20 minutes, by Zoom or by phone; and composite, anonymized results will be shared with all of the participants when the investigation is complete. Your perspective would contribute greatly to the future development of passive system products, design tools, and policies. And if you know of others who are interested in this topic, please forward this message to them as well.
Our interviewers are: Atousa Momenaei, the project leader, a Ph.D. student at the University of Oregon; Dennis Shelden, an architect and educator at RPI; and myself. Atousa and I will be conducting most of the interviews, but Dennis is also available upon request.
We hope very much that you can talk with us! Please either email one of us with a few good times, or sign up for a time on one of our digital calendars:
