OESR - Occupant Exposure Screening Report?

Hello All,

I'm supporting a project that is pursuing Green Globes and trying to get familiar with its content.  I'm hoping someone might have experience with the program and be able to provide direction toward products that have an OESR.  From what I've read, this is a material ingredient disclosure type report, based on ASTM std. E3182-20.  Are OESRs common and I've just missed them, or perhaps they are just taking off?  Any thoughts are appreciated!

Thank you,

Maria

Hi Maria, I haven't dealt with Green Globes in a long time and wasn't familiar with this "Occupant Exposure Screening Report" so I just poked around a little to learn more and purchased a copy. The ASTM Standard was published in Jan 2020; Google wasn't able to find me any products that have reports associated with it, so it doesn't seem that it hasn't gained much traction yet; I'm curious if others have found otherwise. For context, GG's use of this standard seems consistent with GG's origins as an industry-backed alternative to LEED, LBC and other programs that some manufacturers find too restrictive. (GG was originally funded by the forest products industry to promote SFI as a valid alternative to FSC, after they failed to get LEED to accept it as such--we've written extensively about this, and the comparisons between GG and LEED, in the past.) In this case, this standard seems to be positioned as an alternative to the HPD, focusing on risk (hazard + exposure) instead of requiring them to disclose the existence of anything hazardous. It gives them a way to argue that hazardous substances in their products aren't necessarily a problem if occupants aren't exposed to them. This approach doesn't address exposure to hazards up and down the supply chain, however--the standard relies on regulations to address those. Nor does it address accidental releases, like the train derailment in Ohio recently that poisoned a community with vinyl chloride monomer. So this standard might generate some interesting reporting, but I hope it doesn't succeed in replacing HPDs.

Nadav, Our searches align - I only came up with one product from Alpolic so far.  I didn't dig into the Standard itself though, and I really appreciate your review of the different approach (focus on risk) vs. full disclosure of hazards like an HPD (that can then be reviewed in different contexts).  I did hear back from a contact at Green Globes that they haven't seen as much traction with the OESR as they would have liked, and their new GG version (due out later this year) will include alternatives more familiar to the AEC.  I'll keep the group posted if I find out more.
