We’re currently involved in the LEED certification of a new hospitality building. This building will be endowed with a heat-pump exclusively dedicated to the DHW generation. However, due to safety and redundancy reasons, the owner intends to install also a gas boiler that is only expected to work if the heat-pump is required to be shut-off (e.g. failure, malfunction). In this scenario, the building will still be served by hot water (produced by the gas boiler).

For purposes of energy performance calculations, we are not considering the gas boiler because under normal operational conditions, it is not expected to work. Do you validate this approach?
