CS-v4.1 WEc3:Optimize Process Water Use

Eligible subsystems for option 3 in v4.1

Option 3 discusses reduction in process water through non-potable water sources.  Then goes on to define elible systems as...(from ref guide)

Process water uses eligible for achievement of Option 3 must represent at least 10% of total building regulated water use and may not include water used for cooling. Eligible subsystems may include:

  • Boilers
  • Humidification systems
  • Other subsystems using process water

Process water definition per ref guide:

water that is used for a variety of manufacturing processes, including: boiler make-up water; cooling tower make-up water; coating and plating; rinsing and spraying; washing and many others.

Are we to draw the conclusion that for some reason cooling towers are excluded from Option 3 (dealt with in other options).  Or....is it an acceptable approach to reduce cooling tower water use in option 3 and document credit compliance.

Hi Landry, Cooling towers are covered in another option under the v4.1 Optimize Process Water Use credit. Option 1 allows you to earn points by optimizing your cooling tower cycles and increasing the number of cycles by either 25% or 30% through additional treatment and/or maintenance. OR you can optimize cycles and use a minimum of 20% recycled nonpotable water for 2 points and 30% for 3 points. Looks like it makes sense for you to just utilize this pathway under the credit.
