Waste Hauler

Hi Stacey, In my experience, it's the receiving facility that is the issue for LEED not the hauler. So receiving facilities can be certified through the Recycling Certification Institute for a LEED innovation credit or alternate compliance on the construction waste diversion credit. But the hauler just needs to provide the reporting and the commingled backup from the facility and of course remain cognizant of which receivers yield the best diversion rates or have the certification.

Hi Stacey, I totally agree with Michelle -- the haulers' role is really all about the reporting.  I also think it's really helpful when the hauler can help the contractor/builder come up with a Waste Management Plan that a) meets the LEED requirements, and b) actually anticipates and plans for the waste.  I don't see this very often.  Another helpful thing (which I almost never see), is if the hauler's periodic (monthly / quarterly / whatever) have a commingled recycling rate for each facility that commingles are delivered to, that actually matches the diversion rate stated by the facility (the annual average % for the previous calendar year, for example). More often than not, I feel like the haulers make up the percentages. Thank you for putting the question out there!
