Helpful Quote

Hi folks, I'm reading Zen and the Art of Saving the Planet (Xmas gift) and came across this quote over the weekend which resonated for me, and thought might for this group as well:

"We may feel immense pressure to save the planet in this lifetime, and we may be afraid that we can never do enough. The stark truth is that the planet doesn't need to be saved only once; it needs to be saved countless times, for eons to come. It's impossible to save the planet once and for all, all on our own. That the planet that be here now is a miracle, born of countless favorable causes and conditions over billions of years. And the planet will continue to need countless favorable causes and conditions going forward. This realization is good news. We belong to a stream of life, and this moment is our time and our turn to do our part, and to do whatever we can to pass on what we learn to future generations, so they can do theirs."

Michelle, This is pretty powerful, and very much needed. Thank you. I always remind myself that the planet will actually be fine. It will continue on, in some form, with or without us. What we are trying to preserve is the best life possible for future generations of humans and other creatures. But the reminder that we won’t get it “done” and just have to keep doing what we can is a good one. On Mon

Thanks for sharing! This is a great reminder and helpful for those of us who risk falling into the "am I making enough impact" worry-sphere.

Thanks for sharing, Michelle. This reminds me of the Tao Te Ching’s advice to ‘do your work, then step back’ and Gita’s teaching of ‘you have the right to your actions but not to the fruits of your actions.’ Ramana Koti , LEED Fellow, BEMP, GGP Sustainable Design Leader Vice President [HKS, Inc] 3280 Peachtree Road NE, #900, Atlanta, GA 30305 +1 404 442 5428 | www.hksinc.com Pronouns: he/him/his From: Sarah Gud

Thanks Michelle! .. and similar sentiments from the Talmud (Rabbi Tarfon, in Pirkei Avot, 100 BC): "It's not up to you to complete the work of fixing the world, but you are not free to avoid it, either." So, it's not up to each of us individually to solve the climate crisis, but we are responsible to continue to work together to address it. Carry on, Green Gurus...
