Hello Sustainable Design Leaders, The BuildingGreen team is super excited for the Winter Summit coming up in January! Some of you have already signed up, and we can’t wait to see you there. Three important pieces of information:
  1. We are capping registration at 60 people. This helps us create an event that builds trust, community, and camaraderie among attendees. This is also only about a third of the current SDL membership, so if you want to make sure you have a spot, reserve it early! The good news is that we are already planning a Summer Summit, so you’ll have at least one more opportunity to connect this year.
  2. Our reserved room block with the hotel expires on January 9th. After that rooms will be available on a first-come-first-served basis and will not be guaranteed. Another reason to sign up early!
  3. This Summit is open only to current SDL members. If you have a colleague not in the network who’d like to attend, please have them apply for a membership. This event is a great introduction to our community and a perfect time to join!
If you know you definitely won’t be attending, please let me know by email, and I’ll make sure you’re off our Summit Updates email list. If you are definitely planning to attend but can’t register right away, let me know that too so I can make sure you get all the reminders and information! When you’re ready to sign up, the registration page is available here. Questions are always welcome! Jen for the BG Team

Hi folks, Details are coming together for an amazing return to in-person Summits in Phoenix Jan 23-25, and there’s still room to sign up. If you’ve been to a Summit before, you already know what a valuable opportunity this is to get energized and connected with your peers. If you’re new, you’re in for a treat. As one first-time participant shared--the Summit is the best combination of professionalism, intimacy, and collaboration they’ve seen anywhere. Discounted hotel rooms are only available through January 9 and our block of rooms is only guaranteed until then, so now is the time to sign on and join us. Those who have registered have started to prioritize topics of interest. Here’s what has bubbled up to the surface so far: Big picture:
  • What does sustainability leadership in 2023 look like? How has it changed over the last few years?
  • Advocacy priorities to advance our goals
Supporting a Sustainable Practice:
  • Leveraging the Framework for Design Excellence
  • ESG--leveraging the opportunities and avoiding the pitfalls
Technical Content Deep Dives:
  • Designing for a changing climate
  • Decarbonizing existing buildings
  • Cross-network session with SCL members on embodied carbon
  • Energy/Carbon metrics—from EUI to CO2e
Personal Priorities:
  • Pathways for self care and fighting burnout
It’s not too late to weigh in on these topics before the agenda gets finalized. Register today! Nadav

I highly encourage people to sign up!  After not having an in-person summit since pre-pandemic it was a very hard decision for me to cede this opportunity to my amazing colleague Megumi Hironaka who leads sustainable design in our LA office.  Some of you may know her from LA COTE or from last year’s virtual summit.  Being on the steering committee, myself I can tell you that the topics are going to be extremely engaging and the work done at the summit will set the tone for the year to come.  Plus, it’s in sunny and warm Arizona!   I look forward to seeing many of you in person at the next one!

A "breaking news" update: This Summit is now officially approved for 10 CEUs with both GBCI and AIA! There's still time--please join us if you can. Nadav

Hi Nadav, Happy new year. The Summit sounds great! I am thinking about coming and am meeting with Nancy next week and that's one of the things we're going to talk about. As you can probably guess, I am particularly interested in the Decarbonizing Existing Buildings track. I have a great case study on the Edith Green Wendell Wyatt Building in Portland, (which SERA could show if they are coming). I would also love to introduce the CARE tool to SDL'ers and show how it cansupport building decarbonization decision making. Let me know if either of those topics could fit into your planning. Elizabeth and I sold our house in the Hills, bought a small house in a walkable neighborhood and are converting it to be all electric. Lot's of fun and headaches. Heading of to meet with our heat pump contractor now. Cheers, Larry

Hi Larry, That's great--it will be awesome to have you there, and even for those who've already seen the CARE tool, a deeper dive might be in order. There are lots of exciting things coming together for this event! Based on the personal tone of your message you may not have realized that it was posted to the forum, but I'm sure lots of people are glad to hear your news. Making it easier to reply just to the sender of a message is on our list of forum upgrades... Nadav

I would echo Dan's comments...if you haven't yet committed, would highly encourage you to pull that trigger. Considering the in-person fog we've all been in for the past couple of years, there is a lot of pint up energy around the topics slated to be discussed and we're certain A LOT to be gained by directly participating in those conversations. If nothing else, you have the opportunity to enjoy an ice cold beer in sure to be warm AZ during the middle of winter!
