Analysis and Innovation Networking

Hey there hive mind,

I'm hoping y'all can help me as I coach one of my colleagues along his path to develop into whoever he's supposed to be when he grows up. He's interested in focusing on the analysis and innovation side of sustainability and I honestly don't know where to send him for networking with other like-minded people beyond my firm who are exploring both workflows for daylight, views, WBLCA, CFD, and other types of building performance analysis as well as innovation (ie, places where all of that analysis makes interesting intersections with other aspects of architectural practice).

My networks are largely more general and broader in thought leadership through all of you, AIA, USGBC, etc. but there are an almost infinite number of local and national groups working in various aspects of these conversations and I'm hoping you might be able to point me to either organizations or individual people that I could connect him with so he can do some networking through these organizations and/or informational interviews with individuals who are working more closely in this space than I am.

Let me know if anything comes to mind and feel free to email me directly, especially if you're directing me to individual people that you'd rather not overwhelm. My email is: awilson@ayerssaintgross.com

Thanks in advance and I hope everyone has some time this week to breath and connect with family and friends,

Aley

Hi Allison, Some relevant organizations: * IBPSA-USA and local chapters are energy modelers (and a few others) that gather. There is a newsletter and some resources. * Bldg-sim email list. http://lists.onebuilding.org/listinfo.cgi/bldg-sim-onebuilding.org * ASHRAE holds a building simulation conference from time to time. * Acadia (Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture) holds conferences (one very recently) http://acadia.org/ * AIA has some knowledge communities that touch on sustainability/energy use/simulation. https://www.aia.org/pages/4856-aia-knowledge-communities * AIA’s local COTEs sometimes have programming in the areas he’s interested in. * AIA has a building performance guide and other guides on sustainability. One of the best pieces of advice I received early in my career was to not try to do everything…focus on one thing until I became expert in that, and then branch out. So far it has served me well. It’s difficult to not want to become an expert in water use, materials and health, transportation, embodied carbon, energy modeling, and all of the other stuff, but frankly each of these areas is deep enough that you can’t really know it all. -Kjell From: All

Thanks, Kjell! I'll pass these along to him - I'm very much leaning into the fact that my colleagues have related but different interests than I do so I don't have to know it all. Trying to know it all sounds just far, far too exhausting =) Aley

Hi Allison,  I'd like to recommend AEC Tech also - https://www.aectech.us/. This year's event is over but every year they organize a great symposium, hackathon, and workshops. The developers of Ladybug Tools participate every year, the tools they teach and discuss during the event are often related to sustainable design and analysis, and it's a great event to meet like minded people.
