Inflation Reduction Act - Recommended Podcast

Hi Fellow SDLers: I'm sure you're like me and thrilled at the news of the Senate's passage of the historic climate bill yesterday. And also are likely on pins and needles until it's passed the House and signed into law. What a conclusion of a terrible roller-coaster ride that is our Congressional system.

I'm writing to pass along a recommended podcast by a climate scientist relative that does a good job of breaking down the legislation.

Here it is: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/volts/id1548554104?i=1000574909996

Has anyone seen or perhaps created a guide for IRA implications for AEC industry: timing, access and a general 'what it all means' for various sectors? Steven Baumgartner BUSS | 917.664.8666

Steven, the AIA created a summary that could be helpful to you: https://content.aia.org/sites/default/files/2022-08/Memo_Inflation_Reduction_Act_FINAL_8_10_2022.pdf Also, USGBC and AIA are hosting a webinar on 9/14 at 1p ET:  "This lively session will aim to inform and inspire the buildings sector on upcoming opportunities to support decarbonization. Experts who contributed to the Inflation Reduction Act will share timely details of the updated commercial and residential tax incentives, incentives for building energy code adoption, as well as the new rebate programs to promote home energy efficiency and electrification. We’ll highlight what you need to know including timelines, conditions, opportunities to stack incentives, and a few unknowns." Hi folks, Paula Melton also did a nice job summarizing the AEC-related components of the Act in this BuildingGreen article: "A Boatload of Building-Related Incentives in Inflation Reduction Act" and we had an interesting conversation about it on a subsequent SMEP Leaders call. One of the most direct potential impacts is the increases in the 179D tax deduction and the ability to transfer those to the designer if the owner is not subject to taxes. On the call someone noted that reaching the thresholds for that tax deduction will be difficult now, because the baseline was updated from an old version of 90.1 (2007?) to the most current version. Beating that by 25% (or 50% for the max deduction) isn't easy! The good news for decarbonization of existing buildings is that in a renovation situation your baseline is previous performance. That seems like a HUGE opportunity. Anyone want to propose a method for figuring how out to split that deduction between architects and engineers? ;-) I'd love to hear what others are learning or discovering as this all continues to unfold.
