PEFC vs. FSC wood

Hi all,

We are designing a mass timber building and are closing in on selecting our mass timber supplier.  One supplier is offering FSC wood and the other is offering PEFC.  I don't know enough about PEFC to make a clear recommendation to the client about how it compares to FSC.  I understand that PEFC endorsed SFI, so that concerns me.  This project is also pursuing LEED certification, but it seems that with the legal wood pilot credit, we won't see a big point difference for PEFC vs. FSC.  My interpretation is that the documentation and data collection will likely be more complicated for PEFC though.

I appreciate any insights you all could share on this so we can guide the client in the right direction.  Thanks!

I recently had PEFC proposed as a substitution from a mass timber supplier as well - I wonder if it's the same one, Heather. I allowed the substitution because our project is not LEED and our specification does allow SFI, as well as non-certified wood from restoration forestry. I wasn't able to satisfactorily resolve the question of whether PEFC is equivalent to FSC, however, so I'm eager to hear from others on this question. -Kristian

It is our understanding that PEFC is not equal to the carbon sequestration potential, riparian protection, retention requirements and indigenous engagement of FSC-certified forests.  We use the attached document, which I believe may have been provided by FSC at one point.  It is well-sourced with footnotes.     Chris Hellstern, AIA, LFA, LEED AP BD+C, CDT
