Vertua by Cemex vs CarbonCure

Hi folks,

Wondering if this group has insights about the low-embodied carbon product "Vertua" from Cemex, which appears to be a proprietary concrete product launched in 2020.

Our client wants to use CarbonCure; but our likely concrete sub is saying Cemex (where they typically source their concrete) offers an alternative called Vertua and doesn’t use CarbonCure. The spec writer is saying they are really two completely different things, which I believe is correct.

We understand that CarbonCure is a technology that injects waste CO2 into concrete in order to improve the compressive strength.  Strength increases are achieved by means of a chemical reaction that takes place between the calcium oxide in the product's cement and the CO2 that is introduced by CC product. This is often coupled with specifying SCM replacements to reduce embodied carbon.

Vertua is Cemex's proprietary low-carbon mix of concrete and cement, which appears to be relying on SCMs, such as slag and fly-ash, which is what we'd typically specify for low-carbon concrete mixes (just listing % in specs, but not a proprietary blend, no knowing who the concrete supplier will eventually be).

Does anyone have experience with the Vertua product?

Thank you,

Hilary
