NC-v4.1 EAc5:Renewable Energy

Tier 2-Renewable electricity and EACs

Hi everyone,

I'd like to ask if renewable energy (50% for 5 points) will entail purchasing or retiring Green Energy certified EACs for 100% or more. Or are these two things separate? The wording is not much clear or maybe I am not understanding it correctly. Your help will be much appreciated!

Thanks a lot!

They are separate. Tier 2 (50%/5 points) is for off-site renewable energy systems where the LEED project either owns or buys this power under contract. Tier 3 is for buying RECs.

Further to the original post, could someone dissect and interpret this line in the Tier 2 description, please?
  • Green-e Energy certification or equivalent is required for one-time purchase and delivery of EACs of more than 100% of the project’s annual electricity use

You have to either retain or replace the RECs (which are a form of EAC) for off-site renewables. If you are buying more than 100% of the annual electircity use under contract then those RECs must be Green-e or equivalent.

Hi - looking for some help. Is the following interpretation correct?: if the renewable electricity procurement strategy for a LEED project does not have Tier 1 (on-site), and there is no purchase of tier-2 renewable power (off-site), and the only source of renewable energy is via EACs (RECs) trhough virtual Power Purchase Agreements (>10 years, no actual power is purchased, only the EACs) to match 100% of the project's energy use, then only Tier 3 is applicable in this case and the maximum points that can be achieved is 3?

That is correct.

Hi,
Please clarify that an International Renewable Energy Certificate is equivalent to a Green-e Certificate and it can be used in India to claim the offset of scope 2 to gain the points.

They have not been granted a blanket equivalency and the project would need to demonstrate equivalency to qualify under Tier 3.

Per Sergio's question, however, Marcus, for Tier 3, wouldn't they have to provide 750% of the total project energy for 3pts per the "Comparing Renewable Energy Options: v4 vs v4.1" as shown on the LEEDuser's viewpoint page?

Hey John thanks for pointing that out. You would think I would know that since the source of the table is from my company. However, based on the LEED V4.1 Guide there are only three points available for Tier 3 at 30%, 70%, and 100%. Once you add the 10 year term requirement you get up to the 1000% guidance. Perhaps that chart was from an earlier version of LEED v4.1?
