Hello,
I'm currently working on a warehouse house project. We are following the Option 2. Prescriptive compliance: ASHRAE 50% Advanced Energy Design Guide.
According to the Guide, we must comply with one of the following guides:
- ASHRAE 50% Advanced Energy Design Guide for Small to Medium Office Buildings, for office buildings smaller than 100,000 square feet (9 290 square meters);
- ASHRAE 50% Advanced Energy Design Guide for Medium to Large Box Retail Buildings, for retail buildings with 20,000 to 100,000 square feet (1 860 to 9 290 square meters);
- ASHRAE 50% Advanced Energy Design Guide for K–12 School Buildings; or
- ASHRAE 50% Advanced Energy Design Guide for Large Hospitals. Over 100,000 square feet (9 290 square meters)
Do you know which one apply to Warehouses and Distribution Centers?
Btw, our warehouse have refrigerated spaces at -24ºC. So instead of the guides mentioned below, I was thinking to apply the recommendations on the document "Advanced Energy Design Guide for Grocery Stores. Achieving 50% Energy Savings
Toward a Net Zero Energy Building".
Could you please advice me on the most appropiate guide to follow?

At the beginning of each of these guides it tells you the project type(s) that it applies to. I do not believe that any of them apply to warehouses.

Hi Marcus,
Not really, it is not clear for us what guide to use. Given the characteristics of our project, we have assume that we should follow the ASHRAE 50% Advanced Energy Design Guide for Medium to Large Box Retail Buildings. However, we won't have any interior lighting for sales so, is the point associated to it given by default ? In order to adress energy efficiency on "process" spaces, we decided to follow ASHRAE 50% Advanced Energy Design Guide for Grocery Stores as a conservative approach. Both approaches have different points breakdown so it is clear how many points will be earned in the end.

The operative word for the application of Option 2 is "appropriate" ASHRAE 50% Advanced Energy Design Guide". None of the guides are appropriate for a warehouse.
The first paragraph of the retail guide foreward indicates - "This Guide applies to medium to big box retail buildings with gross floor areas between 40,000 and 100,000 ft2; however, many of the recommendations also can be applied to smalleror larger retail buildings."
The first paragraph of the foreward to the grocery guide indicates - "This Guide applies to grocery stores with gross floor areas
between 25,000 and 65,000 ft2 with medium- and low-temperature refrigerated cases and walkins; however, many of the recommendations may also be applied to smaller or larger grocery stores. When combined with the 50%AEDG for Medium to Big-Box Retail Buildings, the combination can be used for larger stores that consist of both groceries and general merchandise."
So neither guide can be used for a warehouse. A warehouse maintains very different conditions and has very different lighting requirements than either of these building types. As I said I am not aware of any of the guides being applicable to a warehouse so this option is very likely not available for your project.
Points are generally not awarded by default.
If you want to demonstrate compliance with this prerequisite you will need to do an energy model (option 1).
