Pilot-Credits WEpc94:No Cooling Tower

ACP for No Cooling Tower

This is a straight forward, easy to document credit for projects that can demonstrate compliance. We've pursued this on a few projects now and I' happy to see there is a way for projects to earn these points using the ACP.

Hi Natalie! Within LEED Online, shoud we only upload the Pilot Credit documentation under the Cooling Tower Water Use or under Innovation Pilot Credits? Since under Cooling tower water use credit I can not select a threshold of 2 credits for NO cooling tower. What's your experience?

Hi Norbert,  I've been able to select the two points under the Cooling Tower Water Use Credit then write a narrative in the Alternate Compliance Path portion of the LEED Online Form explaining that you're pursuing the points for No cooling Tower. I always upload the Alternate Compliance credit language and all required supporting documentation and so far I haven't had any review comments. Good luck!

Thanks for the quick answer! We already prepared all the documentation. Unfortunately in the form I can only enter the ACP narrative under the Special Circumstances, since there is no option for ACP selection, as well as under threshold selection I see 3 options, and neither of them refer to the ACP:
  • Maximum number of cycles achieved (1 point)
  • Achieve a minimum 10 cycles (2 points)
  • 20% recycled nonpotable water (2 points)
Which were Your steps? Thank You in advance!

Hi Norbert - I've always selected "20% recycled nonpotable water (2 pts).

Thanks again, hope it works!

Generally speaking, the LEED Online forms aren't as flexible as one might hope.  But reviewers also seem to understand that, so I agree with Natalie -- you can usually pick whatever options you need to in order to make the form work, then explain the actual scenario to the reviewer in the special circumstances box.  If it's a complex situation, we'll do a narrative PDF upload, but for straightforward ACPs like this one, the Special Circumstances box is sufficient.

We are also pursuing this credit in several projects here in Brazil were is usual the use of VRF system without cooling towers.
