GreenGuru Job Posting Page?

I was talking to Nadav recently about job posting opportunities through Building Green and/or through the Peer network.  He shared this topic has been discussed in the past, and thought I should send a question out to the network.  I am guessing many of you are looking for talent right now too?  Wouldn't it be cool to know people of have been vetted or blessed by the network for new opportunities? We, for example, are looking for certification support to energy modeling to project management.

Should there be a Peer Network Job opportunity page?

Thanks! Gunnar

I agree! This would be a fantastic asset to the peer network. We’re looking for a sustainability specialist/leader in DC and an Energy modeler in Houston

I agree as well! Have been meaning to ask about this for a long time. I imagine there would be a lot of diversity in the actual positions, but having one spot for opportunities within the network would would be amazing. Particularly in this tight job market. For entry level positions, the challenge might be raising awareness that the job board exists, outside of member firms.

I agree 1000%.
Where could there be a better possible place to post?! THIS is the cream of the crop community!!! the next question is whether we post within this existing forum or if there should be a separate space?! Whatever is easier for BG! (I don't have an opinion but wondered if anyone would object to have those postings mixed in?)

I can't believe we don't have a job postings board already! ;) To Barbra's question, I think it should be a completely separate "job's board" but it could also send e-mail notifications when someone posts there. I'd prefer it that way so that people who are looking know exactly where to go and don't have to search through threads to find what they are looking for.

Agreed - on both counts Jennifer. And while on the topic, and until this is up and running, if anyone is looking for a very thoughtful and talented recent graduate from UBC's Landscape Architecture program, please let me know ( jcutbill@lateralagency.ca). I had the pleasure of teaching her last year. OK, I’ll chime in to say in general, a specific job/positions posting would be a useful asset for the SDL/GG group. And, speaking of, I’ll take this specific opportunity to also mention it seems that ZGF is in the same position as many firms, with a couple interesting sustainability positions that we are looking to fill: * Building Performance Data Analyst - ZGF Architects - ZGF is seeking a talented and professional Building Performance Data Analyst with 3+ years’ experience to join our team in Seattle, WA office, focuses on collecting and managing actual (built) project performance and sustainability data, for the measurement and advancement of the firm’s post occupancy work. * Sustainable Design Analyst - ZGF Architects - ZGF is seeking a talented and professional Sustainable Design (Life Cycle) Analyst with 3+ years’ experience with building simulation and analysis (daylighting, LCA, solar shading, etc) to join our team in Portland, OR office to support and provide direction on projects in pursuit of sustainability goals within the firm. -C Chris Flint Chatto AIA, LEED AP BD+C Principal ZGF ARCHITECTS LLP T 503-863-2324 E chris.chatto@zgf.com 1223 SW Washington Street, Suite 200 Portland, OR 97205 zgf.com [cid:image001.png@01D7B90D.3356F810] [cid:image002.png@01D7B90D.3356F810] [cid:image003.png@01D7B90D.3356F810] [cid:image004.png@01D7B90D.3356F810] From: Jen

OK, I have a different reaction to this, wrote it down a week ago, and didn't post it.  But we are still talking about this, so here goes: I think we need to think this through just a little bit.  To me, the clear disadvantage of allowing junior staff into this network is it is a great place to find a new job.  There is no better place to connect with other Architects and professionals doing pretty much what you are doing, quite possibly doing better, going further, in a better environment. Full disclosure I would NEVER have been able to start my own business without the connections that I gained through this network.  The whole reason I went off on my own was that a fellow GreenGuru was begging me to “just take a vacation and write a spec for me please!”  I don’t think my former firm has ever fully realized that. They are still a member, and the woman who has replaced me hasn’t started her own business – yet. But if we all post jobs to this network and we start hiring folks away from other firms, we will get really annoyed, pretty quickly. And we will be annoyed with each other, which isn’t any way to build a strong, supportive network. So I think a BuildingGreen job board, available to all subscribers (including us), with some sort of “GreenGuru member” badge that makes it clear this job opens the door into the GreenGuru peer network, is a great idea.  That would be another way for BuildingGreen to advertise that feature of their website. But posting jobs to Green Gurus only, viewable by Green Gurus only, is just going to encourage poaching.

I kind of agree with Anne on this. -jim Jim Newman | Principal Linnean Solutions Cambridge, MA | Portland, ME www.linneansolutions.com (617) 699-7323

100% agree with Anne and appreciate explicitly saying out loud what others were probably thinking (not the first time I think). I still admit I don't understand the size, complexity of nuance of the Building Green platform, including the Green Gurus and SDL sub-systems, but I think the value of such a list would be that it would be representative of the leading firms that make up the network, while available to the widest group possible.

I strongly agree with Anne and Jim and also meant to say something similar myself. Brad Jacobson FAIA, LEED® AP, DBIA Partner Pier 1 The Embarcadero, Bay 2 San Francisco, CA 94111 +1 415-214-7276 [cid:G_190118_N24_webview_bb0303a9-c805-4097-ac97-3ab99950504f.jpg]

I agree as well in that limiting this to the Green gurus network may be counterproductive (and not very efficient if most of us are looking for younger staff). It would be great to have a more “open” place to post searches. Many of us have brilliant students that we can’t always hire, and it would be great to give them a platform to find the best jobs. Ale. As someone who was recently (but not anymore) on the other-side -- that is a Green Guru/SDL'r seeking a new sustainability position for myself -- a jobs board would be great, and definitely fill the void.

I'll pile on in agreeing with Anne, Jim, Brad, Chris, et al...

Awesome responses all.  Exactly why Nadav suggested I put this question out to the group.    A job opportunity listing open to all, managed by BuildingGreen, could be a wonderful thing, with a potential GG company tag, This seems to be of interest to the group.   BG probably has a lot on their plate, but something to add to the collective wish list!   Thanks!  Gunnar Thornton Tomasetti

I'm with Gunnar, Anne, Jim, Brad and Chris on this....a Building Green Jobs Board with GG company tag. And not specifically green gurus stealing each other's green gurus :) Then we would no longer want to collaborate in this safe space. If there was a Building Green Jobs Board, I would post our job openings to it straight away!
