Miller Hull's EMission Zero Initiative

Beginning this year, Miller Hull will not only continue to quantify the upfront embodied carbon of every project we finish through construction, but now purchase third-party certified carbon offsets equivalent to one-third of the project’s impact. Great design is no longer enough - we must take responsibility for our architectural impact in the built environment. Miller Hull is excited about offsetting our downstream Scope 3 emissions, and we hope our clients, consultants, general contracting partners and other design firms will join this call to action.

See our entire Emission Zero initiative, including a FAQ section (because we know you’ll have lots of questions), on our website here: https://millerhull.com/about/#emission+zero

We are open to suggestions for improvement and appreciate any and all feedback.

On behalf of all of Miller Hull,

Kristen, Chris and Jim

Thanks for sharing, Kristen. This is a great resource. Bravo to Miller Hull.  Sorry if I missed it by skimming, but do you have a timeline or plan to address the other 2/3 downstream scope 3 emissions? And/or perhaps encouraging subconsultants to share in a portion of the design responsibility by also purchasing offsets?

Thanks for the questions, Sarah. Our timeline is essentially now as we are discussing it actively with our clients and general contractors (and have even had some positive interest from both parties in some cases!! Hooray!). There is no easy way to divide up responsibility for a project between the design team, the owner and the construction team, so that's why we just split it into thirds. We are also talking to our subconsultants on the design side about sharing in the effort too, but for now Miller Hull is taking on the entirety of the design team's responsibility (excepting MEP which does not have good enough data for us to include at this point, but as the data improves, we will include that as well).  We are hoping our commitment is a catalyst for broader changes and investments by all parties, but we knew we had to hold ourselves accountable first before asking the same of others.
