For mid-rise projects, can the prerequisite be satisfied with renewable energy systems? Energy Star for Homes (EA 1) does not allow projects to meet the minimum HERS Index with renewable energy systems, and the EPA Energy Star Multi-family High Rise Program does not allow renewable energy systems to be used to meet the prerequisite. Ruling in EA 01-36 clarified that solar thermal systems could be used to meet the minimum requirement, but it\'s unclear if this applies to mid-rise projects.

Ruling

LEED for Homes has not set any limit on the use of renewable energy systems to meet the prerequisite in EA 1 for mid-rise projects. Therefore, although USGBC prefers that all projects meet at least 15% reduction through energy-efficiency strategies, the prerequisite can be met through renewable energy systems.
