Our project is on an existing university campus. No parking will be provided specifically for our building or in our project boundary since there are existing parking garages on campus. Can we add preferred parking spaces for low emitting and fuel efficient vehicles to an existing parking garage in order to earn this credit? If so, how many spaces should be provided? The university would provide special "green" preferred parking stickers to faculty and students with qualifying vehicles and provide signs at spots in the garage near elevators so that only people with fuel efficient vehicles could park in the most preferred spots.

Ruling

If parking is being provided for the project in an existing parking garage on campus (not part of the project design and construction scope), it would be possible to attain this credit based on providing preferred parking spaces for 5% of the total vehicle parking capacity assigned for use of the project only (i.e. the number of spaces dedicated for use of the occupants of this project). The parking stickers should therefore be made available for the building occupants only. Further, the parking garage should be within 1/4 mile of the project itself, or serviced by a shuttle bus.
