In gut-rehab projects, can parts of the thermal bypass inspection be satisfied using blown-in insulation and/or infrared cameras?
According to EPA, the energy rater "shall use their experience and discretion" to determine whether a home passes or fails the thermal bypass inspection. LEED for Homes follows this same principal, but every project must pass the TBC. If the energy rater is satisfied that the methodology and results of infrared testing on a project meet the TBC requirements, this is acceptable. Similarly, if the home energy rater is satisifed that a specific approach to blown-in insulation meets the TBC requirements on a project, this is acceptable.
