Will the USGBC accept the industry standard test "CAN/ULC S774" as an alternate to the CA/DHS for the MR 2.2 credit? Both are non-proprietary, small chamber emissions tests developed through consensus processes and S774 is also considered in the industry as quite rigorous.
Meeting the CAN/ULC S774 concentration thresholds cannot be considered equivalent to meeting the CA/DHS requirements, and a product that passes the CAN/ULC S774 test cannot be automatically granted credit for low-emission insulation in MR 2.2. However, the CAN/ULC S774 test protocols can be used to demonstrate that a product meets the CA/DHS concentration thresholds. However, testers must follow the procedure for retrofit applications (Procedure B), which requires intermittent testing of the materials. Also, indoor air concentrations resulting from the product must meet the permissible concentrations described in the CA/DHS test.
