Environmentally Preferred Workstations The State Green Team and the design Team for a large government office building in California issued a landmark environmental specification for procuring office furniture systems. This specification includes criteria for lighting, recycled content materials and indoor air quality. It was successfully integrated in a three-year, $60 million Open Office Panel System for this project, receiving the first significant shipment of these workstations in full compliance with the specifications. The following features and transformations occurred as a result of the development of these specifications: - Getting the task lighting industry to change minimum energy and quality performance standards was a major market transformation accomplishment. The Energy Commission conducted a rigorous process, working with lamp and ballast manufacturers, lighting consultants, energy consultants, and researchers to establish that the current California task lighting standards were technically feasible, market available and cost effective. It was only through the information gathered during this rigorous process that we were able to successfully defend this new performance standard against market forces that were resistant to this change. - Prior to this effort, task lights with electronic ballasts were not being made available to the market even though electronic ballasts suitable for task lights were being manufactured for other applications. Electric power factor was raised from the typical
