We are designing a building with a roof slope greater than 2:12 that will use a standing seamed metal roof for 100% of the roof area. We would like to use a Galvalume roof panel, and have found conflicting product information regarding the SRI of Galvalume roofing panels from different manufacturers. The reference guide for LEED 2.2 states that the requirements of SS credit 7.2 are simply to use roofing materials having a Solar Reflectance Index equal to or greater than 29 for steep sloped roofs for a minimum of 75% of the roof surface. This represents a change from LEED version 2.1, and there is some confusion in the marketplace regarding the current credit requirements. Please clarify the credit requirements and confirm which of the following products, if any, meet LEED requirements for Sustainable Sites Credit 7.2. If additional information is needed to determine their compliance, please clarify what needs to be provided. 1. Atas roofing products lists a SRI of 55 (with an Emittance of . 08 (ASTM C1371) and a total initial Solar Reflectance of 68 (ASTM E903). for their Unpainted Galvalume Plus Product. 2. Berridge Manufacturing Co carries a Satin Finish Galvalume metal roof panel. They state that the panel complies with Energy Star requirements for roof slopes greater than 2:12, but not LEED requirements. They are in the process of researching the SRI, solar reflectance and emittance, in order to provide that information to us. 3. Butler Manufacturing lists a SRI of 63 (with an emittance of .25 and a reflectance of .68) for their Galvalume roof panels. They state that their panels comply with LEED requirements for steep slope roofs. 4. Centria Steel Roof Panels lists a SRI of 53 for unpainted Galvalume and states that it complies with LEED requirements for steep slope roofs.
The LEED-NCv2.2 Reference Guide states that the SRI requirement for a roof with the pitch 2:12 or greater is 29. The products the project team is concerned with, and their corresponding SRI values, are listed above. Products 1, 3, and 4 appear to be in compliance with the credit intent and requirements for roofs that are 2:12 or greater in pitch. Independent reviewer research found that Product 2, the Berridge Manufacturing Co. Satin Finish Galvalume metal roof panel, is offered in colors that are in compliance with the requirements of this credit. If this product is used, though, documentation regarding the SRI should be provided. Applicable Internationally.
