LEED CI Version 2.0 does not address energy associated with domestic water heaters. (water heaters are not rated by energy star and are not part of HVAC in EAc1.3) Our CI project is a laboratory and preliminary energy models indicate the domestic water heating energy could be as much as the lighting energy. Lighting energy is allotted several points under EAc1.1. We propose the following innovation point: Intent: Achieve increasing levels of energy conservation beyond the prerequisite standard. Requirements: Increase water heater efficiency to 85% or higher (when the ASHRAE 90.1-2004 mandatory value is 80%) Submittals: Provide cut sheets of all water heaters indicating they are greater than 85% efficient Please let us know if this approach seems acceptable for an innovation point.

Ruling

The applicant is requesting approval of a proposed Innovation in Design (ID) credit for energy savings associated with water heaters. Commercial water heaters are currently not rated by the EnergyStar system and, therefore until such time, residential water heater efficiency may be included in the calculations for EAc1.4. To be eligible for an ID credit, calculations should show a minimum of 15% reduction in domestic hot water energy use over code. Applicable Internationally.
