Credit Interpretation Request No 2 EQ Credit 4.1 Low-Emitting Materials, Adhesives and Sealants EQ Credit 4.2 Low-Emitting Materials, Paints EQ Credit 4.3 Low-Emitting Materials, Carpet EQ Credit 4.4 Low-Emitting Materials, Composite Wood The stated intent of these four credits is to "Reduce the quantity of indoor air contaminants that are odorous or potentially irritating to provide installer and occupant health and comfort." However the body of the LEED Reference Guide discusses the use of Green Seal products on exterior finishes also. Please advise if the use of Paint Products on the exterior of the building, which do not meet Green Seal standards, would cause the loss of EQ Credit No 4.2 even if all the interior paint materials meet the requirement. Paint products which do not meet Green Seal standards for the outside of the building are being considered because of increased durability. Polyurethane paint will require painting every ten (10) years. Semi-gloss latex paints which meet the Green Seal standard will require painting every two (2) years. If latex paint is used then more VOC will be released over the 10 year period, due to repainting, than with the one initial application of polyurethane. On balance the environmentally preferred solution in this case would be appear to be the use of polyurethane paints. Please confirm that this argument will be acceptable and that EQ Credit 4.2 will not be affected.
The Low-Emitting Materials credit is focused on materials inside the building. The use of exterior paints that are not Green Seal standard does not jeopardize Credit 4.2. Applicable Internationally.
