PROPOSED LEED INNOVATION CREDIT: MIXED MODE VENTILATION SYSTEM Intent: Reduce environmental impacts associated with fossil fuel energy use. Capture additional energy savings by designing to allow mixed-mode ventilation. In mixed-mode ventilation the building conditioning systems can be turned off when outdoor conditions allow. Requirements: Show that the building can be conformably operated in natural ventilation configuration for some portion of the year. Show that the mixed mode operation reduces building energy consumption by an additional 10% beyond that modeled in EA Credit 2. Submittals: Calculations showing comfort conditions can be maintained. Calculations showing additional energy savings.

Ruling

Innovation points are awarded for exemplary performance and for strategies or technological innovations. The mixed mode system as described does not appear to meet either of these criteria. Turning off conditioning systems when they are not needed is a form of active controls, a common HVAC systems feature. The switch to passive mode may produce energy savings that can earn points under EA Credit 1. EA Credit 2 points are awarded for the generation of energy on site. A mixed mode system that does not generate energy on site, cannot capture a point under EA Credit 2. Applicable Internationally.
