Education Program The City of Hillsboro, Oregon is proposing to build an urban community plaza adjacent to the LEED registered City Hall and Plaza Building. In order to foster community pride and sustainability, the 25,500 sf plaza will incorporate elements from the agrarian history of Hillsboro. These elements may include inscriptions, plaques, or representations of historic community figures, significant agrarian events, and technological innovations. Signage will also point out the sustainable environmental aspects of the project including thoughtful use of landscaping to reduce the use of potable water, lighting that provides pleasure and security while helping to retain the dark sky, and other environmentally sensitive methods and materials included in the project. Linkage will also be made to the water quality aspects of the project through our Jackson Bottom project. The intent is to sustain the rich cultural history and connection with the environment through education. Further, it is the City\'s intention and an adopted policy of City government, to use this Project as an example for the development community. Information on the project will be developed into a brochure distributed though our Community Development Departments (Planning, Engineering and Building) targeted to developers and builders describing the benefits of sustainable building practices. Is this an acceptable approach for the comprehensive signage educational program? In addition to the signage, guided tours through the City Hall will also be given to the public to educate the public on sustainable building design and implementation. The tours will be offered at specific times during construction, upon completion, and as required thereafter. Do the proposed measures meet the intent of the green building educational program which earns an innovation point?
