Inquiry

For 6.1, we suggest applying two of the following: - zoned HVAC, - increased operable window locations (operable windows located at the extreme opposite width of the exterior walls) to induce greater likelihood of natural ventilation, - programmable thermostats, - master switches.

Ruling

UPDATE BY STEERING COMMITTEE 1/16/02 Residential multi-family projects can earn this point with the established credit requirement by using operable windows. Lighting controls in residences are individually controlled and would meet the intent of this credit. ORIGINAL RULING: There are two concerns with the suggested approach. First, you are proposing a change in the credit requirements, which is not possible through the Credit Inquiry Process. Secondly, the proposed change does not offer performance criteria that affords multiple design or technology solutions. LEED is trending towards a performance model, where critical design criteria are identified, and project are awarded for demonstrating performance achievement against these criteria. Modifications to performance criteria in order to accommodate vertical market differences, or occupancy variations within a vertical market, are handled outside the Credit Inquiry Request process. This process is under development by the LEED Steering Committee. The energy efficiency measures listed above can be used to apply for Energy and Atmosphere Optimize Energy Performance credits. Increased operable window locations designed to increase natural ventilation apply toward IEQ credit 2 Increased Ventilation Effectiveness.
