On our previously developed site, 50% of the remaining open space will be restored by planting native or adaptive vegetation. However, the owner wants to use about half of that remaining open space as periodic recreational fields for employee soccer, football, and baseball. If the owner does not "mark" the fields, but still uses them for team sports, would they still be considered as part of the restored open space area? IF the owner does mark the fields i.e., spray paint soccer or football boundaries and yardage areas, or eliminate grasses from specific areas to highlight baseball diamonds, home plate, or lines between bases, would this make the restored open space area ineligible for consideration as part of the fulfillment of the credit requirements?

Ruling

The intent of this credit is to restore damaged areas to provide habitat and promote bio-diversity. Playing fields do not restore habitat, and typically do not consist of native or adapted species. Installing playing fields can count toward achievement of SS 5.2 for open space, but does not achieve the intent of SS 5.1 for restored habitat. Applicable internationally.
