Our project consists of a total of 6 new buildings within an existing university property line and designated for use by the university students and faculty. The LEED project boundary line encompasses the 6 buildings as one LEED submittal as outlined in the "LEED-NC Application Guide for Multiple Buildings and on Campus Building Projects." Five of the buildings are mixed use type with 90% of the building area being categorized as student housing (dorm units) and the remaining areas located on the 1st floor consist of classrooms, offices, mail room, administration areas and other student amenities. The 6th building is a food services building that consists of a cafeteria, conference rooms, and a campus maintenance area. Our credit interpretation request is in regards to the choice of calculation methodology for our project. Since the project falls within an Institutional setting and is used by the students and faculty, we are planning to use the institutional requirements of bike racks and or storage for 5% of all building users and showers for 0.5% of FTE across the entire project measured at peak periods. Please confirm that our interpretation of university student housing and food service areas shall follow the institutional requirement.

Ruling

The project team requests confirmation of compliance with LEED- NCv2.2 SSc4.2 requirements. Based on the projects\' use of the LEED-NC Application Guide for Multiple Buildings and on Campus Building Projects, the requirements of this credit are applicable to each building in the multiple building project. As such, each building covered by the LEED certification must meet the requirements of the credit based on their individual usage. For the residential components of the building, e.g. dorms, the requirement is to provide covered storage for securing bicycles for 15% or more of the building occupants. For the other non-residential areas of the buildings the requirement is to provide secure bicycle storage for 5% or more of all building users (measured at peak periods- this can exclude the FTE counted in the residential areas) and provide shower facilities for 0.5% of the FTE occupants. Please note that all bicycle storage must be located within 200 yards of the building entrance. Storage and showering facilities can be shared between buildings as long as are within 200 yards of the entrance to the buildings that are included in the LEED certification.Update April 15, 2011: Please note that all 2009 projects in multiple building situations must follow the 2010 Application Guide for Multiple Buildings and On-Campus Building Projects, located here: https://www.usgbc.org/ShowFile.aspx?DocumentID=7987. 2009 project teams should check this document for up to date guidance on all multiple building issues.
