Inquiry

Our project complies with the requirements for EQc7.1, compliance with ASHRAE Standard 55-1992, Addenda 1995. The project is an approximately 10,000 s.f. single-story office building comprised of private and open offices, meeting rooms, break room and storage. The project is located in an arid desert region of the Southwest. Typically, active humidification/dehumidification equipment is not needed to maintain acceptable humidity levels within office spaces (we will provide psychrometric analysis and data to support this). The Reference Guide does not clearly define the quantity of humidity sensors needed to qualify for this credit. We propose to install humidity sensors in three (3) locations based on areas containing the largest number of building occupants - open office areas and training/meeting room. This will enable monitoring humidity in the areas experiencing the greatest level of potential humidity fluctuation and demand for occupant comfort. Humidity sensors are integrated with the DDC control system. Will the design approach and system (with supporting documentation) described comply with the requirements of this credit?

Ruling

The proposal narrative states that the project is located in a geographic area that generally does not require active humidification / dehumidification systems to maintain thermal comfort under ASHRAE 55-1992, Addenda 1995. The team is proposing to install indoor humidity monitors in high occupancy areas of the building. The proposed strategy of monitoring humidity in high occupancy areas is reasonable. In order to fully meet the requirements of this credit, installed temperature and humidity monitors must be configured to provide feedback to allow for operator\'s adjustment of installed HVAC systems to maintain targeted comfort criteria. A CIR ruling for EQc7.1 dated 9/8/2004 provides information regarding the use of ASHRAE 55-2004 in lieu of ASHRAE 55-1992, which may be helpful for your project. Applicable internationally.
