Inquiry

The California Academy of Sciences consists of primarily large exhibition spaces and aquariums requiring continuous monitoring by a team of scientists for support and maintenance. We are striving to attain the View credit, LEED EQ 8.2, and have provided views throughout most of the public and administrative spaces in the museum. Our question relates to how to characterize the space that is occupied only part of the day by "roving" scientists. We require clarification as to whether the spaces occupied by the scientists could be counted as support areas and/or a special exception and thus be eliminated from the space calculation for the view credit . A description of the situation follows. The scientist area is located in the basement of the building. Each scientist is assigned an individual workstation with a desk and computer that is used on a temporary basis throughout the day. The workstations do not have access to daylight or views, but do have proximity to tasks and functions they need to be engaged with, such as the aquariums and fish. Outdoor views are not appropriate in this environment. The scientists also spend time circulating throughout the building tending to various support tasks in exhibit areas on the upper floors that achieve the prescribed daylight and view standards of LEED EQ credit 8.2. Please clarify whether we need to count this particular workstation area as "regularly occupied space" even if the scientists are not working at their desks all day long. Please confirm if the design team can consider them as low occupancy support areas and thereby eliminate them from the calculation.

Ruling

Per the 5/24/04 Ruling for this credit, the factor to be used in determining whether or not to include your scientist area in the calculation should be the nature of the tasks performed in the space, not the time spent in the space. For the spaces to be exempt from credit requirements, your LEED submittal must expand on the description of the tasks and justify that they would be hindered by the use of daylight. Any regular work areas where tasks would not be compromised by daylight should be included in the calculation. Applicable internationally.
