Inquiry

The intent of this credit is to establish a connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces by providing views. We feel that by requiring windows in certain areas it compromises the functionality of the space. Therefore, we are proposing that certain areas, such as the field house and the competition gym, be excluded from the baseline calculations of regularly occupied spaces. Adding windows may jeopardize the performance and safety of the students involved in such activities as track, long jump, pole vault and shot put among others. We are proposing meeting the intent of the credit by setting the glazing at the upper portion of the required height and above. This will help to eliminate the glare and further ensure the safety of the students and faculty.

Ruling

The credit requirements for IEQ Credit 8.1 specifically exclude non-regularly occupied spaces and spaces where tasks would be hindered by the use of daylight. From the narrative provided, it is entirely reasonable to assume that: (1) the spaces described are not regularly occupied; and (2) the use of daylight in the space could have detrimental effects on the people using the facilities. As such, these spaces can be excluded from the daylighting calculations. Please clearly delineate the areas of the project being excluded from the calculations in IEQ Credit 8.1 and provide a brief narrative describing the rationale and assumptions made for each excluded area in the certification documentation for this credit.
