Inquiry

This building is a naturally ventilated building. The requirements for filtration media are not applicable to this project due to the ventilation design. If we develop and implement an IAQ management plan that meets the stated requirements and design approaches for all relavent aspects of the SMACNA and LEED guidelines, will we be eligible for this credit? (ie. reduce emissions, intensify housekeeping, control sources of air pollution, use low emitting products, use electric tools, exhaust air and recirculate through portable air filter, etc.)

Ruling

If a project has not installed a mechanical HVAC system that utilizes filtration systems, it may provide appropriate documentation and request an exemption from the MERV 13 filter requirement. Thus, a building with a ducted natural ventilation that filters its outside air (or cooled solely by natural ventilation, but heated by a ducted system) would be required to have MERV 13 filters. The project must develop and follow a comprehensive Construction IAQ Management Plan that meets or exceeds the referenced SMACNA and LEED credit guidelines. Credit documentation should include a detailed narrative that describes the building\'s ventilation design and demonstrates that the project stringently followed the remaining applicable requirements of this credit.
