Inquiry

We are requesting an interpretation for the requirement of direct line of sight to vision glazing from 90% of all regularly occupied spaces for EQ Credit 8.2 (Daylight and Views). The Life Sciences Center has two full height Atriums which are 160\' long (North-South), 60\' wide (East-West) and 73\' high (see attached sketch). The atrium roofs are fully glazed with clear glass and give views to the sky. South walls of the atrium are glazed curtain wall. Classrooms and laboratories are on the west and east side of the atriums. Our question is; can we include regularly occupied areas with a view to the atriums into the 90% of regularly occupied rooms with views required for EQ Credit 8.2

Ruling

Skylights, roof monitors and vision windows not within the allowable range of between 2\'-6" and 7\'-6" above the finish floor level do not qualify for views to the outdoors under EQ Credit 8. The atrium roofs described in this inquiry are fully glazed, and therefore, would be considered skylights and any views to the outdoors through the atrium roof could not be included in the view calculations. Windows that are above 2\'-6" and below 7\'-6" from the floor are considered vision glazing and provide direct views to the outdoors. Based upon the project description, the atrium\'s south wall appears to have glazing, and depending on the height and configuration of the curtain wall, it may offer direct line of sight to the outdoors from certain locations. A review would need to be performed for each space (per floor) that has views through the atrium\'s south wall. The LEED v2.0 Reference Guide (page 269-270) offers suggestions for determining and calculating a space\'s line of site. If regularly occupied areas have 90% or more view opportunities through the south wall, then the room square footage could be included in the view calculations. Applicable internationally.
