We are requesting a USGBC credit interpretation for LEED 2.1 Energy & Atmosphere Credit 1, Optimize Energy Performance. Our project consists of a University recreation center with a pool and spa within a natatorium. Do we need to include the energy required to heat the pool and spa within our building energy compliance? We consider the pool heat to be similar to a plug load and thus a Non-regulated load that would not be included in the Energy Cost Budget Compliance Form.
The pool is being heated for the occupants. Referring to the ASHRAE definition of process, both the space heating and the pool heating are clearly intended for "conditioning spaces and maintaining comfort and amenities for the occupants of a building," and thus are not process energy. ASHRAE 90.1-1999 clearly defines base case parameters for pool heating including a 78% boiler thermal efficiency, an R-12 pool cover, and time controls (Section 7.2.5, and Table 7.2.2 of 90.1-1999). These parameters should be modeled in the budget case, and any improvements to pool heating efficiency should be modeled in the design energy case. Applicable internationally.
