We think we meet the intent of this credit but would like the committe\'s opinion prior to application so that we may address any concerns you may have. Part 1, entryway systems. no questions part 2, deck-to-deck partitions and exhaust. Our housekeeping rooms have deck-to-deck partitions and are exhausted directly to outdoors. We have some labs where chemical use occurs and those have 100% outside air with approximately 10 air changes/hr. We do not have any dedicated copy/print rooms. Copying is done at several small copiers dispersed throughout the office areas. Since our client does not need a dedicated copy/print room, must we build one to qualify for credit? Part 3, drains. All of our drains go to the same main sanitary line. There are no grease traps, acid neutralization tanks or other means to separate or treat liquid waste. Can you please define what it means to have "sinks and drains plumbed for appropriate disposal of liquid wastes?" (p. 250)

Ruling

Labs where chemical use occurs must be exhausted through a separate system and not through return air systems where air will be recirculated. The design appears to have addressed this concern. Centralized copiers and printers allow pollutant sources to be isolated from the building occupants and allows for separate exhaust. LEED cannot control the installation of convenience copiers and printers, and therefore does not attempt to set a threshold for their use. The Credit states that if there is a copy room present, it needs to meet the isolation criteria. As the project does not have a copy room, this part of the Credit criteria is not applicable. Please refer to CIR 0064-EQc50-092801. Part 3: Lab areas that use chemicals not approved for sink disposal must be stored and disposed of in accordance with jurisdiction requirements. Sinks that dispose of chemicals, such as detergents, which are approved by the local water treatment facility, can be part of a conventional sanitary drainage system. If greywater is being directed to re-use for irrigation or uses or to a natural wastewater treatment system, then separate plumbing would be required for disposal of conventional cleaning agents. In your LEED Application provide information on the types of chemicals used in the facility and describe the method of disposal in the credit narrative. Applicable internationally.
