How is natural ventilation defined in the Credit for Natural Ventilation? When building in a cold climate, could it include a geo-thermal pump?
The intent of the credit is to reward approaches that do not require mechanical energy to provide comfort. In a cold climate the credit could captured with a combination of passive solar heating and ventilation cooling. A diagram showing the solar savings fraction would part of the documentation indicating compliance. Geothermal heating, using heat from natural steam vents or hot water springs, would be best applied for under Energy Credit 4, Renewable energy. Ground coupled heat pumps would contribute to energy efficiency and would help capture Energy Efficiency Credit 1. Applicable internationally.
