Are adhesives that exist within the exterior wall (i.e., not "in" the building) or within a prefabricated product (i.e., casework) required to meet the VOC limits?

Ruling

*** NOTE: This ruling is superseded by the rulings of 4/19/04 and 6/21/04 for the definition of "interior space"; and 6/25/02 for adhesives used in pre-fabricated assemblies. *** The LEED Reference Guide (formatted version of June 2001) states on page 247 that, "This credit applies only to indoor air contaminants. VOC-emitting materials used on the building exterior or the project site do not need to be addressed under this credit." Therefore, the adhesives in within the exterior wall (where they will not off-gas into the interior) are not to be considered for achieving this credit. However, the pre-fabricated casework (or any product installed in the interior spaces) must be considered and meet the requirements of this credit. Applicable internationally.
