How can we achieve MRc8 at our campus when we are unable to track durable goods waste diversion at the building level?

Ruling

The project team is inquiring how they can achieve Existing Buildings Operations and Maintenance Materials and Resources credit 8 Solid Waste Management – Durable Goods on a campus where there is no tracking of durable goods waste at the building level. This credit may be earned at buildings on a campus where there is no tracking at the building level if there is a comprehensive durable goods (e-waste events, furniture salvage programs) waste program and a campus wide diversion rate either through continuous tracking or a waste audit. In order to qualify to earn this credit at the building level through a campus wide program there must be in place at the building level a durable goods diversion education program such as signage and directions for durable goods waste streams and the building must hold an e-waste event at least once every year. The education program must include events and standardized processes to collect and divert e-waste and furniture. Clearly marked collection points must be provided at the building for all durable goods waste types.
Exemplary performance is not an option under this path and may only be achieved through individual building tracking. When tracking aggregated waste from the campus each waste hauling vendor should be itemized (ex. Hazardous waste, medical waste, or international waste).
