In mid-rise buildings, is outside make-up air required for projects that use exhaust-only ventilation? The language in EQ 4.1, part (a-i) is unclear: "Projects using exhaust ventilation systems must specify how outside air is delivered at the flow rate required by ASHRAE 62.2-2007."
Ruling
The language in EQ 4.1 (a-i) means that mid-rise projects that utilize exhaust-only ventilation must provide a source of dedicated outside make-up air. This requirement cannot be satisfied with either operable windows or natural leakage through the envelope.
