Sustainable shopping centers

I'm looking for precedents of retail centers (think outdoor centers with multiple buildings or converted indoor malls) that have incorporated any of these strategies. Also, any research studies on the health, social, and other benefits of incorporating these strategies.

a. Preserve/restore natural ecology, green infrastructure stormwater management, and/or resilience

b. Pedestrian and bicycle networks

c. Community programming and equity for the community served

Burwood Brickworks comes to mind - Stephen Choi is a great ambassador for this project! I think it is in performance tracking phase for LBC certification.

This may not be a right scale, but I have a local (to where I live) example. https://clarksvillecommons.com/ Main component of the complex is restaurant/food hall, but it also includes small shops & office spaces. They utilize the center space for music events, seasonal farmers market etc..

Hey Kate, You could look at City Creek Center in Salt Lake City. Essentially they tore down a mall that used to be there and restored an old creek that had been moved underground, routing it through the center of the mall. I believe there is a removable ceiling for much of the mall. https://www.hobbs-black.com/city-creek-center

Kate – Don’t forget San Antonio’s Riverwalk, a historic precedent for this type of development. Lois From:

And then there's Willingboro Master Plan & Public Library in NJ, which was a COTE Top Ten winner in 2007 by Croxton Collaborative. It's a nicely daylit library inserted into an abandoned shopping mall, with lots of work on revegetating the site. According to Google Maps the vegetation is still there, and they've added a lot of PV on the roof!

ACC Highland is a shopping mall converted into a community college along Austin's only existing rail transit line and has spurred residential and commercial development in the area: https://www.austincc.edu/campuses/highland-campus
