Retail-NC-v4 EQp2:Environmental Tobacco Smoke Control

Smoking on a rooftop terrace

Dear all,

we have a project aiming a certification under the Retail NC v4. There will be a restaurant on the rooftop terrace of our building. According to the local norms, it is not forbidden to smoke on a terrace and within the outside area of a restaurant, our client is willing to prohibit smoking within the LEED required distance but not willing to prohibit smoking within the restaurant area. In general, I have a few questions:

- Is smoking on a rooftop terrace, if the distance to openings is compliant with the LEED requirements, prohibited or not?

- If it is not prohibited, should there be a designated smoking area or only the distance rule applies?

- If smoking is allowed, are there some other special requirements that we must take into consideration?

I would very much appreciate it, if you share your experience. Thank you.

Dear Velislava,   Despite the rooftop terrace meets the distance requirement from openings, entrances, operable windows, and outdoor air intakes: Smoking shall be prohibited inside all common areas of the building. Smoking outside designated areas shall be prohibited in any space used by the building for business purposes.

Dear Afogreen Build,  thank you for the comment. Am I understanding it correctly: If they have a restaurant on the roof and they decide that it is a smoking area, from LEED perspective this still will not meet the compliance for the prerequisite?

Dear Velislava,   Yes. It is stated in LEED guide that the prerequisite also prohibits smoking in outdoor areas used for
business purposes.
