How can design agency be used as a toolkit to build sustainable communities through civic engagement? Through this webinar, we will explore various projects and the paths used to identify civic design problems, potential community stakeholders and development partners, and potential clients and funders. How do these project pathways allow for proactive engagement and meaningful action that lead to transformative social change?
We will also explore how the architectural profession is experiencing an expanding role as thought and action leaders in improving the cities, towns, and neighborhoods in which we live, work, and play. How do we use community engagement as a crucial tool in responding to the shift in practice while generating cultural capital?
Some of these webinars are for Peer Network members only, but for this one we encourage you to invite any colleagues who might be interested. One of the goals of this presentation is to explore the potential for creating a new peer network for urban planners who are focused on inclusive community engagement. So feel free to share the Zoom registration link with others, and put us in touch with anyone who wants to explore the idea of getting this new network started!
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Rico Quirindongo, Principal - DLR Group
Rico is a principal and Civic Design Leader for DLR Group. Rico believes that through proactive design, vision, and multi-agency collaboration, opportunities for social change can be realized through urban-scale, civic projects.

Driven by the desire to have a meaningful impact on both urban and natural landscapes, Rico works with organizations to positively influence communities through design. He has developed a keen awareness of the special requirements needed to make public and private projects a success. Rico embodies the role of citizen architect and is committed to the betterment of his hometown, Seattle, through public engagement, design, and civic service. Rico is a recognized expert on civic projects and city-convened taskforces to create and execute processes for inclusive and authentic engagement. Rico is currently chair of the Pike Place Market Preservation and Development Authority Council, is a Downtown Seattle Association board member, and was AIA Seattle President in 2012-13.
