2020 Summits in Flux--decision deadline April 15

Dear Sustainability Leaders,

During this time of shifting our lives and work to online, BuildingGreen is working quickly to assess the challenges and opportunities regarding the remaining Peer Network Summits for 2020. As timelines continue to be extended for social distancing (and virtually connecting!), we are mapping out the possibility of moving these summits online. We are exploring technological tools and creative online facilitation routes, while keeping a pulse on projected timelines for responsible travel.

Our primary concern is to maintain the health and safety of our staff and summit participants, at the same time prioritizing value and purpose for your sustainability leader peer groups to gather, share, and support one another. Our BuildingGreen team is aiming to share a decision by April 15th and in the meantime we will also coordinate with Steering Groups to evaluate next steps and opportunities for online and/or in-person events in 2020.

Your partners in crime,

Nadav, RoseAnn, and the whole BuildingGreen staff

Thanks for your note Nadav. I think this is very prudent. We just announced cost cutting measures - travel, conferences and the like are going to be much more closely scrutinized for approval through the end of this year. I support the move to consider these as virtual events this year and thank your staff for the work they constantly do to support our networks.

I concur with Jennifer and would add: by the time of the next summit, we will all be pros at using breakout rooms in Zoom and silent brainstorming in MIRO. Of course we will miss being in a room with each other and all the energy that brings, but the learning can go on.

I totally understand that we will likely have to do a remote meetings.  However, as a new member of the group I will be very disappointment.  Meeting in person allows us to get to know each other, and since I do not know most of you, it is doubly important for me.  With that said our health and safety is paramount and a zoom meeting is much better than no meetings.

OK – Curious about what MIRO is. Agree with Andree and Jennifer – and just think how much more satisfying it will be when we can safely meet in person again! Be well, everyone! Jonathan Weiss, Jacobs Fro

Dear Peer Network Members, Like many organizations, we are having to make tough decisions regarding the events we had planned for this summer. After reviewing numerous options for our remaining 2020 summits as a team, and discussing options with the Peer Network Steering Groups, it’s clear that we have to prioritize the safety and health of our participants and staff by moving these events online. Although we will miss the in-person connections we all value so much, we are excited to explore new ways of interacting with each other virtually. We see this as an opportunity to dig deep into the purpose of these summits and create a whole new experience. In your post-summit surveys you’ve provided some great information on what you value most from the in-person events. The things you mentioned most are:
  • Knowledge and resource sharing (including specific tools & techniques)
  • Connections
  • Specific actions and actionable Ideas
  • Inspiration
We’re working on programs that can deliver on all of these great outcomes--in some ways perhaps even better than we can do in-person. We look forward to a lower carbon impact and the possibility of reaching more Peer Network members than we could with traditional summits. While we have yet to finalize dates and structures for these online events, we’re confident based on the testing we’ve done in the past couple of weeks that we can make the most of these physically distant, virtually connected times. We appreciate the feedback we’ve already received from many of you and can’t wait to continue working with you to reinvent the summit and offer something that honors the high expectations we all have of the summits. Thanks for your continued support and encouragement as we navigate this adventure together, and, as always, do let us know if there is anything more we can do to support you! Nadav, RoseAnn, and the rest of the BuildingGreen team
