Embodied Carbon and Mass Timber – a shared learning conversation
March 31st, 2020
3pm - 4pm ET (12pm - 1pm PT)
At the winter SDL summit we had a great discussion about the embodied carbon/sustainability impacts of the industry’s current love for Mass Timber construction. Miller Hull has been doing some deep dive research with Ecotrust to better quantify the embodied carbon impacts of Mass Timber and ‘hacking’ our design tools to illustrate these comparisons. Hacker is fielding an upswell of client interest in Mass Timber that is leaving them wondering about local and global forest capacity, how to come to terms with the pressure this new fascination places on habitat and how to tie conservation into the client conversation. So, we’ll go through the Miller Hull research and trigger a deeper conversation from Hacker’s experiences that will hopefully lead to a robust conversation and even some action items for those interested. Hopefully many of those in attendance at the winter SDL summit can participate and round out the issues we need to consider. We’re all learning in real time, and this conversation will hopefully spread that learning farther and identify where we need to go deeper.
About the presenters
Kristen Dotson, Sustainability Services Director, Miller Hull, Seattle, WA
She has over 10 years of experience managing sustainability initiatives across diverse markets and at scales ranging from large corporate Fortune 500 companies to local municipal projects. At Miller Hull, Kristen leverages her expertise beyond project-specific work to organize and implement company-wide sustainability initiatives, helping to define what leadership in sustainability and resiliency mean for the company and for the profession at large. In addition to achieving over 250 LEED certifications, Kristen spearheads several other green certifications in the office including WELL, Fitwel, SEED and Envision.
Sarah Post-Holmberg, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, Associate Principal, Hacker
Sarah joined Hacker in 2014 and has 11 years of experience as a project architect and design leader for K-12, higher education, commercial office, and cultural projects throughout the Pacific Northwest. She believes that the most fulfilling aspect of architecture is transforming a powerful idea into an architectural expression that is simultaneously approachable and provocative – the result of careful listening, thoughtful communication, intense collaboration, and a rigorous design process. Sarah co-leads Hacker’s Social and Environmental Advocates committee and is one of the firm’s most passionate voices for the integration of design and sustainability. She has recently been involved in the design of several mass timber buildings and is leading Hacker’s charge toward carbon reduction strategies that align with other project goals.
