Call today at 1pm Eastern

Hi Small Firm Sustainable Design Leaders!

Our call today at 1pm Eastern will focus on the ways in which your firm is impacted differently than larger firms on the variety of topics and issues that are reflected in the 2020 SD Leaders Winter Summit REPORT. Take a look at this report and especially at slides 14-33. Bring your observations, thoughts and perspectives. Nadav and I look forward to your participation.

Thanks! Jerelyn

Hi all, Following up with photos of our "EUI graphic templates" that I mentioned on the call as a means to help distribute the sustainability message throughout the firm, and a "passive" way of getting newer firm members up to speed with our mission and sustainability vocabulary. It adapts the Zero Tool results graphic and calling out some of the key metrics... we also are tracking our "% electric" as a statistic as well.  We've sent out the template for teams to complete and pin up and share with clients if they want to. It's not perfect or by any means a comprehensive graphic of ALL sustainability measures, but we thought it would be easiest to get teams to bite off this first piece - benchmarking, energy use, net EUI, and fuel type implications. Interested to see if other firms are using wall space to communicate sustainability messages too.

Sorry I couldn't make the call today - I have an OAC during this time.

Hey, Gwen. Thanks for sharing. Recently we have used a similar graphic (cut and paste right out of ZeroTool) for communicating primarily with our consultants (largely MEP) regarding our goals for a project. Just last week we talked about the idea of posting this, or something similar, for all internal design reviews to keep the objective front and center and part of the dialogue. I recall Payette does something similar, as a large firm example.

This is great sharing! We have an internal committee structure and Sustainable initiatives (including 2030) are adopted under our Materials & Technology committee. I'm going to bring some of these ideas to our committee meeting this week...thank you!  I mentioned the topic of Resiliency and how its definition seems to encompass more than preparedness for natural and other unforeseen disasters. The Climate Change panel discussion I attended recently was hosted by the Chicago Women in Architecture group and among the panelists featured was Shannon Gedey from Perkins+Will. She presented Resiliency as a broader concept encompassing three topics: sustainability, economy, social justice. It was a very interesting perspective and definitely put a different lens to the topic, that included concepts of neighborhood resiliency/recovery as well as viability to build in regions constantly affected by catastrophe/natural disaster.

Hello everyone, Thanks for a great call yesterday! Here are the notes. Please use this forum to continue the discussions on the differences or similarities between small and large firms in Embodied Carbon; Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion; and other topics. Here is the Summit Report from the recent Winter Summit for the SDL large/medium firms network, which we used to guide the topics for this call. You will see several 5-minute presentations referenced in the report. I'll be sharing the slides from most of those presentations to the SDLS forum shortly in case you'd like more information on those. It was encouraging to hear from so many of you this time! The next call is Tuesday, March 24th, 1pm EST. All are welcome to participate. Best, Jen & the BG team
