Project in a resort attached to casino that allows smoking

I have a client planning a complete fit-out of one of their retail spaces. The project is located in a resort in Las Vegas, which is attached to a Casino that allows smoking. Smoking is not allowed in the shopping/ dining area of the resort where the project is located . My question is, is the project eligible for LEED certification even though smoking is allowed in the Casino portion of the building. Could additional IAQ strategies be adopted such as self-closing doors, enhanced ventilation etc. to meet LEED tobacco smoke requirements.

Hi Anna, that sounds reasonable to me but I highly recommend explaining your case to USGBC and getting their confirmation in writing, given that this is pretty strict prerequisite.

HI Anna, Before offering to implement additional IAQ measures, I would definitely check in with your LEED coach to get confirmation on the situation. Could the area that the retail is in be considered a separate building from the casino? Be sure to share any written policy (tenant agreement?), posted signage that already exists regarding smoking in the retail area of the building, as well as any ventilation or other IAQ measures the casino might be using.  If they don't see it as meeting the criteria, then ask them if there are additional IAQ measures you could incorporate.

yes, smoking should be allowed in that part of the building. However, it all depends on the agreement between the Casino and the certain resort. By the way, I think that it's stupid to waste your time and money in the casinos. I am gambling from time to time too, but it's very rare. Moreover, I am always playing on online casinos from home. I am just picking a good casino that has a good reputation on casinoluck.ca, and play on it for a couple of hours. For me, it's not a way to earn money. I am just relaxing.

Hi, Anna. I think that smoking should be allowed on the territory of the casino. However, I am not 100% sure, and I am really curious how did this all end. Could you please share it with us ?

Hi, Thank you for the feedback. I wish I had a more informative update. But the client decided not to pursue LEED certification for this particular retail space. In part because of difficulty meeting this prerequisite and other requirements the resort placed on waste hauling, lighting, finishes and flooring etc. It was too much trouble to work around the tenant fit-out requirements.
